Bringing her ‘Lovers Gonna Love’ manifesto to Noise Origin, Janette Slack is urging the world to ‘check themselves’ with a relevant play on words designed to be worn with pride in defiance against some of the more devastating events of 2020. The Hong Kong-born Eurasian, London-raised DJ, studio boss, instructor, and all-round good-vibe creator has embraced the new abnormal of 2020 by launching her first ever monthly radio chat and music show, Beats & Peaces on Clockenflap Music. Slack’s charisma and hi- energy personality was a no-brainer as host of the show that invites a new guest each month selected from every pocket of Slack’s life in and out of the music industry. Her main motivation for the podcast-style show is giving a voice to a range of people who are expressing positive & real-life stories of hope as well as the occasional rant to the masses – tune in to enjoy Janette’s casual banter with an eclectic menagerie of inspirational characters from the arts arena, accompanied with carefully selected tunes from a multitude of styles and eras. Slack’s musical career began as a 17-year-old in Hong Kong spinning records, promoting nights, hustling hard and quickly finding herself being flown out to the US, Canada and Australia. A stint in London saw her complete studies in Audio Engineering all while working in the legendary Camden record shop Vinyl Addiction (home to breakbeat heavy-weight label Fingerlickin’) before she was 21. Janette’s second vinyl release in 2004 saw a surge in DJ shows in London with gigs at famous clubs including Ministry of Sound, Fabric, The Cross, Cargo and The Egg. The portfolio of London venues and nights expanded to include the equally iconic Fantasy nights at The Coronet, SE1, The Coliseum, Mass, The Fridge, and Scala, the latter segueing into a sensational seven-year residency (her 2011 debut album, TG Session, offers an aural window into the soul of those unforgettable nights). Since returning to Asia in 2014, Janette has played at festivals including Secret Island Party, Clockenflap, Pink Dot, Macau’s Ultra Festival and Breakfest (Australia). As Hong Kong’s preeminent DJ of choice, Slack has headlined in many of Hong Kong’s most reputable venues including Beatship, Fly, Ophelia and the highest bar in the world… Ozone at the Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong. Janette’s striking fashion sense and marathon party mixes have created a highly respected and coveted DJ for private island parties, luxury cruises, afterhours in a secret club, soundtracking fashion catwalks and blasting bass music at international festivals. Recently her focus has shifted somewhat from banging beats to taking her role as a music educator to the next level. Already an instructor for her favourite sound designing, editing and music composition software Logic Pro X, this year Slack has been mentoring high school kids onsite and offsite via Zoom preparing them for their finals and also mentoring them to reach their personal goals. She has carved her own syllabus as an add-on to the School Music Syllabus and conducts mini-Master classes. Award-winning producer Andy Wright, who’s worked with some of pop’s most established acts, from KLF to Luciano Pavarotti, Eurhythmics to Simply Red to Simple Minds to Massive Attack, has suddenly had a rock epiphany and is working with brand new band Punt Guns. Janette has spent this year remixing a half of their album due to be released early next year on vinyl. Beloved by her peers as an industriously hardworking, diverse and creative powerhouse on the international music scene, Janette Slack has indelibly stamped her reputation in Hong Kong as ‘The city’s music boss’ (Time Out).
